FPL Gameweek 1: The Best Captain Choices

Mohamed Salah (BOU) - Highest Projected Point Scorer

Salah has an outstanding record on the opening day of the season, and he’ll look to extend it when the defending champions host Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday night. The Egyptian has scored 9 goals in 8 Gameweek 1 fixtures since returning to the Premier League.

Last season, Salah was especially dominant at Anfield. He scored 13 home goals (the most of any player) and topped all midfielders for expected goals at home (10.99).

Liverpool as a team were prolific too, netting 42 goals at Anfield — second only to Manchester City (43). They also ranked third for big chances created (61) and first for expected goals at home (41.49).

Bournemouth, meanwhile, struggled defensively on the road. They conceded 30 away goals (12th in the league) and kept just two clean sheets away from home. They also ranked 12th for shots conceded (261) and 7th for expected goals conceded (28.91) in away matches.

Gameweek 1 Player Points Projections

Our Predicted Points & Stats tool currently projects a score of 7.4 for Salah.

Erling Haaland (wol) - Highly Projected Points Alternative

Haaland will be looking to start strongly as Man City face Wolves. The Norwegian international scored 22 goals last season and, as shown in the image below from our Opta Stats Sandbox, he ranked top among forwards for big chances (40) and expected goals (23.50), despite having his minutes limited by injuries.

Stats for Forwards

Man. City were second for goals scored (72) last season and also ranked second for big chances created (111) and expected goals (74.20).

Their hosts Wolves struggled defensively throughout the campaign, conceding 69 goals – a total better only than the relegated trio of Leicester (80), Ipswich (82), and Southampton (86). The Midlands side were ranked ninth for shots conceded inside the box (333) and 14th for expected goals conceded (59.17).

According to our Predicted Points & Stats tool, Haaland is currently projected to score 5.8 points.

Chris Wood (BRE) - The Differential

Wood enjoyed his best ever season in the top flight, with only Haaland (22), Isak (23), and Salah (29) scoring more goals than his 20.

As shown in the image below from our Opta Stats Sandbox, no Nottingham Forest player registered more shots inside the box (57) or accumulated a higher expected goals total (15.02) than the 33-year-old.

Stats for Forest Players

Nottingham Forest scored 26 goals in home matches last season, ranking 12th, and were 14th for expected goals (26.74) on their own ground.

Their visitors Brentford conceded only 22 goals in away matches, the fourth-best record in the league, but rode their luck defensively. No team allowed more shots (347) in away fixtures than the London side.

According to our Predicted Points & Stats tool, Wood is currently projected to score 5.0 points.
