Top Five Key Players for Fantasy Premier League 2025/26 Gameweek 5

Welcome to our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) guide for Gameweek 5!

Each week, we’ll highlight the top picks to help you make the smartest moves for your FPL team.

Here’s what we’ll focus on for each Gameweek:

FPL Headliner: Mohamed Salah (EVE)

Salah scored his second league goal of the season with a late penalty against Burnley. He also registered a goal and an assist in the Champions League midweek, suggesting he may be rediscovering last season’s form after a slow start.

As shown in the Opta Stats Sandbox, the 33-year-old ranked top among midfielders for big chances (14) and Expected Goals (xG) (10.99) in home matches last season. He also created 13 big chances, a figure bettered only by Saka (14).

Liverpool have scored nine goals in the first four Gameweeks, the joint-highest in the league. Only Chelsea (22) have managed more shots on target than their 21.

Everton, their visitors, have conceded just three goals and kept two clean sheets. However, the Toffees rank 17th for shots conceded (53) and 14th for Expected Goals Conceded (xGC) (6.48), suggesting their defence may not be as solid as it looks.

According to our Predicted Points & Stats tool, Salah is projected to score 6.6 points.

Top FPL Forward: Erling Haaland (ars)

Haaland has started the season in typical fashion, scoring five goals in the opening four Gameweeks — more than any other player. The Norwegian also leads the league for shots in the box (18), big chances (9) and xG (4.51).

As shown in the Transfer Analytics feature, he is currently the third most transferred-in player this week.

Man City have scored eight goals so far, the fourth-highest in the league. They also rank second for big chances (12) and third for xG (7.69).

Arsenal, however, have been rock solid at the back. The Gunners have conceded just once, keeping three clean sheets. They sit third for shots in the box conceded (24) and second for xGC (2.49).

According to our Predicted Points & Stats tool, Haaland is projected to score 4.4 points this Gameweek.

Best Midfielder: Cody Gakpo (EVE)

Gakpo has only scored once this season, but the Dutch international leads all Liverpool players for shots (11) and shots in the box. He’s also been their main creative spark, registering eight attempted assists and creating two big chances.

As highlighted in the Player Heatmaps feature, he averaged 5.5 FPL points per game at Anfield last season.

Points Per game for Gakpo in Home Matches

Liverpool scored 42 goals at home last season with only Man City (43) faring better. The Merseyside outfit were top for shots in the box (238) and xG (41.49) in home matches last season.

Everton have not kept a clean sheet in either of their away matches this season and have conceded three goals. The Toffees are ranked 19th for shots conceded (33) and 18th for xGC (3.75) in away games this season.

Best Forward Pick: Jean-Philippe Mateta (whu)

Mateta has scored just once this season but the French international will be hopeful of adding to that tally as Palace travel to struggling West Ham.

As shown in the below image from our Opta Stats Sandbox, the 28-year-old leads the way amongst Palace players for shots in the box (five), shots on target (six), 'big chances' (three) and xG (1.64).

Palace have scored just four goals (10th) in as many Gameweeks, however the Eagles are ranked fourth for shots on target (18) and third for 'big chances' (10).

Their hosts West Ham have conceded 11 goals, more than any other side. The Hammers are 19th for shots in the box conceded (38) and 15th for xGC (6.68).

Top Defensive Asset: Virgil Van Dijk (EVE)

Virgil has racked up 22 FPL points over the opening four Gameweeks with two clean sheets and four Bonus Points while only Senesi (55) has racked up more Defensive Contributions (DEFCON) than his 49.

Liverpool have conceded four goals (eighth) and have kept two clean sheets. The Reds are ranked fourth for shots in the box conceded (25) and fifth for xGC (4.24).

Their local rivals Everton have scored just five goals over the opening four Gameweeks (seventh), the Toffees are ranked 15th for shots on target (10) and eighth for xG (6.32).
